We started our week with <u>Horton Hears a Who</u>. We colored, cut, and attached elephant ears to a sentence strip to make a headband. Click <a href="http://www.seussville.com/activities/HORTON_ElephantEars_1.pdf">HERE</a> for the free printable. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures of our finished products.<br />
<br />
We made patterns with Dr. Seuss:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHYcyFkd9tPY9-ewdDoW43IpqrnVkK24dKaKjPtWtIRnoeT3t0fZH8ITB7GLybVE3JUJZybf1O6bbixeGElTeeApUkULrCuVe32Vj4PR8CrzhVzihJtViA3Dzpcxqv-rWu6EWGTgDX7lk/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHYcyFkd9tPY9-ewdDoW43IpqrnVkK24dKaKjPtWtIRnoeT3t0fZH8ITB7GLybVE3JUJZybf1O6bbixeGElTeeApUkULrCuVe32Vj4PR8CrzhVzihJtViA3Dzpcxqv-rWu6EWGTgDX7lk/s320/011.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

It was a complete accident that this activity turned out so stinkin' cute!! I originally intended to print the "______ can make patterns with Dr. Seuss" on white paper and then back it on red paper (that's what I have done in the past), BUT orange paper happened to be in the copier. I didn't want to waste paper, so I stuck with the orange and added the picture of the Lorax instead of Cat in the Hat. With the movie coming out on Friday, you'd think I would have planned this!<br />
<br />
I was feeling creative, so I switched it up for the threes and love how cute it turned out this way too! This patterning idea came from<a href="http://www.jmeacham.com/seuss.htm"> Jessica Meacham</a>.<br />
<br />

We read <u>The Cat in the Hat</u> and then made a Cat in the Hat headband:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT0rW9M0CQrHZ0UMFKz7TAom8UGp9GgP1I-TeNcn575eqdUiBE-RTT7lFBQi5oZQ6kzMKnnklHNQNgUkOpqYTiSOEYLQJk1GO81_I18kHC7HXov0tSufRvuQIob4wYBGUCi23vV5rNIuI/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT0rW9M0CQrHZ0UMFKz7TAom8UGp9GgP1I-TeNcn575eqdUiBE-RTT7lFBQi5oZQ6kzMKnnklHNQNgUkOpqYTiSOEYLQJk1GO81_I18kHC7HXov0tSufRvuQIob4wYBGUCi23vV5rNIuI/s320/010.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
We also read <u>The Cat in the Hat Comes Back</u>. Although this story didn't have Thing 1 and Thing 2 in it, we made <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Dr-Seuss-and-Friends-Math-and-Literacy-Fun">Deanna Jump's</a> Thing 1. Aren't they cute!?<br />
<br />

I forgot to tell my threes (whose Thing 1s you see above) to tuck the blue hair behind the shirt. I'll get this right tomorrow with my fours who will also be doing this adorable craft!<br />
<br />
We also completed some worksheet pages...<br />
<br />
Here, we designed a new hat for Cat. Unfortunately, this was the only picture I got...(This printable is from abcteach.com)<br />

I read <u>Love, Splat</u> to my three and four year old classes this Thursday and Friday, even though it was after Valentine's Day. Then we made Splat the cat, another great activity from Reagan at <a href="http://tunstalltimes.blogspot.com/">Tunstall's Teaching Tidbits</a>. I had wanted to do this around Christmas with <u>Merry Christmas, Splat</u>, since it's actually from Reagan's <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Christmas-Art-Projects-Pack">Christmas Pack</a>, but I didn't get to it. As you can see though, this craft can be adjusted easily to go with any Splat book. (Instead of having Splat hold holly, he is holding a little red Valentine, just like in the book... Splat gives Kitty (his crush) a little red Valentine's card). :-)<br />

What I love about these bingo dauber pages is that they are great for sight word practice. Simply fill in the circles with sight words that you've recently introduced or need reviewed and assign each a color. These could also be used for numbers, letters, letters vs. words, shapes vs. numbers, even addition! There are so many possibilities! I should note that I didn't end up using the patterns from Reagan's Winter Art Pack, available <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Winter-Art-and-Writing">HERE</a> on TPT. I had a limited supply of green construction paper, so I had to scale the size down so that the head, body, arms, and legs all fit on one piece of construction paper per student. Reagan's Winter Art Pack has great stuff, so be sure to check it out if you haven't already.Mrs. Russell's Classhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09850531716465841164noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4688319330955282361.post-77275311110523851932012-02-09T10:49:00.000-08:002012-02-09T10:49:36.518-08:00The Hat<div style="text-align: center;">After reading <u>The Hat</u>, by Jan Brett, my three-year old class made these paper plate hats:</div><br />

Here's our graph:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5PkzmSH7iHMjmA6vXbhqGldBHP1wfqbNrfdn3fyrXUcHpFc8jGCCqnABpjgnbTZn8q1JowEZiVdV0SezV1DlfERSLcMa_HVMBVrzw7CZGUCpVrD_wlqWcexVrN8RkYCnHaNYy8907U5Y/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5PkzmSH7iHMjmA6vXbhqGldBHP1wfqbNrfdn3fyrXUcHpFc8jGCCqnABpjgnbTZn8q1JowEZiVdV0SezV1DlfERSLcMa_HVMBVrzw7CZGUCpVrD_wlqWcexVrN8RkYCnHaNYy8907U5Y/s320/002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
MOST of my students predicted that the Giants would win. (Two of the footballs on the left are teacher votes. My aide and I both predicted the Patriots, so minus our votes 7 kids predicted the Giants and 6 kids predicted the Patriots). Before doing this fun little graphing activity, my students wrote their name on their football. They LOVED doing this graph. This idea came from <a href="http://mrskilburnkiddos.wordpress.com/2011/01/31/classroom-superbowl-party-ideas/">Mrs. Kilburn's Kiddos</a>.<br />
<br />
We had fun with Super Bowl themed centers...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnfHW-RnsXjZDVc8XaFotkMHxpfBV9eG8YSspXCOA5cKQqEHAp7o0pJ63VrqdzYh8XO-_njZ-yYg8MSi9JmCxUeI4yFFK_kR71aIRCIXvdJx4x82v9tb5PpaxFod8vMt6Ews-oM_7u5gU/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnfHW-RnsXjZDVc8XaFotkMHxpfBV9eG8YSspXCOA5cKQqEHAp7o0pJ63VrqdzYh8XO-_njZ-yYg8MSi9JmCxUeI4yFFK_kR71aIRCIXvdJx4x82v9tb5PpaxFod8vMt6Ews-oM_7u5gU/s320/003.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">Above, students read and colored the take-home book "Superbowl of Colors." They also had to cut out and glue the footballs. This was a free download from <a href="http://mrskilburnkiddos.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/superbowl-of-colors-book.pdf">Mrs. Kilburn</a>. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMPTdeV9CvjmhLDQMrRufSP5yx0JqG0IkxMjd4-4ftM-ZXnpbcCMUfm2Uq_BXUFDH4OwfUmFdNfip1G_drqNKsen34SRclh67mc-Qa5i_2Ecb71fAD0LvceQ9kBMEQ7QK7KfGBJNnwvEA/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMPTdeV9CvjmhLDQMrRufSP5yx0JqG0IkxMjd4-4ftM-ZXnpbcCMUfm2Uq_BXUFDH4OwfUmFdNfip1G_drqNKsen34SRclh67mc-Qa5i_2Ecb71fAD0LvceQ9kBMEQ7QK7KfGBJNnwvEA/s320/005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">Above, students completed this football addition page. One of my advanced kids did the one that you see above. Most of my other kids had the addends stamped for them ahead of time. After they added, we stamped the answer for them to trace. Again, this is from Mrs. Kilburn.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEIHPi8zlc8vQNNji0HuJx3XpxYLTk8c04a3kRY_i4mMW-yAxUt44h7m_kdH3GakuN6jWFihH00nyqzcF0DcJMmGYoh-P4JMNC7DewVN3k2MAdxF-77ogJ8is4SLWtYvVbUkg51dHplxY/s1600/006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEIHPi8zlc8vQNNji0HuJx3XpxYLTk8c04a3kRY_i4mMW-yAxUt44h7m_kdH3GakuN6jWFihH00nyqzcF0DcJMmGYoh-P4JMNC7DewVN3k2MAdxF-77ogJ8is4SLWtYvVbUkg51dHplxY/s320/006.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Students had to color the numbers blue and the letters brown above (from <a href="http://www.kinder-pond.blogspot.com/search/label/Superbowl">Kindergarten Hoppenings</a>), and below they traced numbers in the top box and wrote them on their own in the bottom box. Depending on the students' needs, I stamped different numbers in the box for them. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivh4oIi3gzWvIXB5YSjLQBOdF1gptGSNCSmz_SkGljaLlvM_gcMUKQH9dnkCCjbu4QWjcUu6dNjEsOMpKtO2v_hTYllVzTpFv-xb5lfW_L-98G8n46jAnFqNVZ3lbpi34bDmt_sICZ7XM/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivh4oIi3gzWvIXB5YSjLQBOdF1gptGSNCSmz_SkGljaLlvM_gcMUKQH9dnkCCjbu4QWjcUu6dNjEsOMpKtO2v_hTYllVzTpFv-xb5lfW_L-98G8n46jAnFqNVZ3lbpi34bDmt_sICZ7XM/s320/007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">On Monday, we discussed our predictions and then did some coloring to make a Giants helmet:<br />

I had every intention of posting this weekend. However, I woke up at 4am on Saturday SICK!!! At first I thought maybe I had food poisoning, but after getting past the being sick in the bathroom part of my Saturday morning... I spent the rest of the day on the couch with a relentless headache which was actually probably a fever (didn't take my temp)... and back pain. Flu symptoms?? I don't know. But whatever it was... cost me an entire day this weekend. Ughh! I spent yesterday trying to get as much done as I could, but then there was the Superbowl... so, I need another weekend STAT!<br />
<br />
Okay... on to the groundhogs! I'll post Superbowl stuff in a separate post tomorrow!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">We make these adorable little groundhog faces from Cara at <a href="http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/">The First Grade Parade</a>! This was my favorite activity of the day. I would have LOVED to have had them draw the groundhog's burrow and do the writing piece that went with this craft (see Cara's post), but I haven't done a lot of writing with my preschoolers yet... other than their name and numbers. Shame on me! It was my New Year's Resolution. </div><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">We have been practicing simple addition and writing numbers in preschool. To complete this activity, I had my students roll a dice to determine how many marshmallows they would get in each cup. My students who are really getting it used a standard dice with dots for numbers 1-6. Those who are at a beginning level used a dice I had from a Lakeshore game with numbers 1, 2 and 3. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">If you look closely, you can see that some of my students used number stamps so that they could trace the number. I didn't let them use the stamp for the number 1. ALL of my students can write a 1!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">I got this idea from Mrs. Wood at <a href="http://woodkinderclass.blogspot.com/2011/01/hot-chocolate-math.html">Mrs. Wood's Dual Language Kindergarten Class</a>. I was able to print the "Hot Chocolate and marshmallows in my cup..." strip for free at <a href="http://larremoreteachertips.blogspot.com/">April Larremore's blog</a>. When you get to her blog, look on the left. You may need to scroll down to the "Find it Fast" section. Click on CAMT, then scroll to the bottom where you will find a link to CAMT Masters. For the mugs, I did an internet search and used "copy and paste." I didn't have time to prepare mugs out of construction paper, and unfortunately I didn't have time to get real marshmallows either... be sure to check out Mrs. Wood's blog to see how cute hers turned out! Hers have real marshmallows! Next time that's what I plan to do, but my kids LOVED doing this activity, even with pom-pom balls (and some had to use cotton balls)!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Another fun hot chocolate and marshmallow activity we did was this little painting craft...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">This idea is from <a href="http://www.teachpreschool.org/2011/12/hot-cocoa-play-day-for-preschoolers/">Teach Preschool</a>. Normally I have 15 four-year olds! Something is going around, and whatever it is, I don't want it!<br />

This time with my 3s, and this time I remembered to have them put the cotton balls on the arms and legs.... Voila! I LOVE how much cuter they are with the little bit of extra detail! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBaqP9oDXwEvLEIbKrL9LLYR4rzocpnBU50ZCuZaQZGGimDHRYfUgWN-14KsgUiQ4fckHUePEuBW_2b53i7VyPITaaxOU3Abr2UEF7cTLhQAMRuHSOR7Vsr-rfj-jD_tZg1_2aC92lcMc/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBaqP9oDXwEvLEIbKrL9LLYR4rzocpnBU50ZCuZaQZGGimDHRYfUgWN-14KsgUiQ4fckHUePEuBW_2b53i7VyPITaaxOU3Abr2UEF7cTLhQAMRuHSOR7Vsr-rfj-jD_tZg1_2aC92lcMc/s320/001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And once again...time for me to get back to...what else...but READING for grad school! I'm up to my eyeballs in reading assignments and it's only the first week! Seriously, 5 chapters for one class, 2 for another, and 7 for another. That's 14 chapters! Technically, I've already read 11 of those chapters because I got the books ahead of time and read before classes had even started, BUT, I'm rereading.... maybe not all of them, but we'll see! :)Mrs. Russell's Classhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09850531716465841164noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4688319330955282361.post-42926110143487759342012-01-25T12:22:00.000-08:002012-01-25T12:22:42.439-08:00Eskimos, anyone?I'm taking a quick break from grad school reading to bring you a blog post! (And I'll apologize ahead of time if my blogs become a bit infrequent. I'm taking THREE grad classes this semester to work towards my Reading Specialist Certification and Master's in Language and Literacy Education). But anyway... here's our craft of the day:<div><br />

<br />
I recently came across this "You Can Draw a Cat!" workbook page and thought this would be a great resource to have! <br />
<br />
I'm interested in making and laminating copies of this page and others like it to help my students with writer's workshop. I also thought it would be helpful to have for mini-lessons. I'm not very artistic, so this will help me do a better job modeling a good picture for my students, and then of course, I can model how to stretch out words to write something to go with my picture!! <br />
<br />
After some searching, I found the source of this page:<br />
<br />
<img alt="Follow the Directions & Draw It All by Yourself!: 25 Easy, Reproducible Lessons That Guide Kids Step-by-Step to Draw Adorable Pictures & Learn the Important Skill of Following Directions" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51-4JwycVVL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpg" /> <br />
<br />
I'm very excited to get a hold of this and start using it!Mrs. Russell's Classhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09850531716465841164noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4688319330955282361.post-25219013488144563022012-01-21T08:35:00.000-08:002012-01-21T08:35:10.600-08:00Penguins, please?!?Hello all! This past week, I did penguin books and activities with my preschoolers. Here's the crafts we did:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZSqOz5-lABsRinchlv0fhpwnBbwUisQtBgpHgCj66hLzxno93IFzo6E9mQIw7Eg91Nj6rIyZvuDWE7CNjqjHQafadPJlB2eOWTVSCAN8Pr0nEd6GJ1BW2C_-kthPGn-qkgO6gDfH4agE/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZSqOz5-lABsRinchlv0fhpwnBbwUisQtBgpHgCj66hLzxno93IFzo6E9mQIw7Eg91Nj6rIyZvuDWE7CNjqjHQafadPJlB2eOWTVSCAN8Pr0nEd6GJ1BW2C_-kthPGn-qkgO6gDfH4agE/s320/003.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Happy Feet Penguins!!! From Joanna Davis at <a href="http://ourartlately.blogspot.com/2011/01/happy-feet.html">ourartlately/we heart art!</a> LOVE this! Hers are especially cute with the added details that her kinders did. Be sure to check hers out! I would have loved to have done a little more with our penguins, but we just didn't have the time! And, some, just couldn't commit any more attention....SNACK, please?? Sigh...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeeyeHA-5bYavLqebE9SPPEM3h5N5T8ttSLpkcjNgmYDeNtKi60s51aGOBAEjA5v72wqxlO5wMlLgqLfyG6IzgZvIKgbJHZFoRJ0H-nzxryF01_FY9Q321JuiOlxXbtWGofl7EagMWhAs/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeeyeHA-5bYavLqebE9SPPEM3h5N5T8ttSLpkcjNgmYDeNtKi60s51aGOBAEjA5v72wqxlO5wMlLgqLfyG6IzgZvIKgbJHZFoRJ0H-nzxryF01_FY9Q321JuiOlxXbtWGofl7EagMWhAs/s320/002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">And... to simplify our next penguin project, students started with this....</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkyQZ-TgYmOYLXFKR4V6wD9crSJGARQ7yLdEiOjJU3R2cmU_eaVki_KIAcMCsHAj9TUw-AWra32nftbNcc3NSQenmm-EmwNzmDiq584bzlUuo09yJpsoJQavMXj9Ay-uyJFTXR8Zi2tuk/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkyQZ-TgYmOYLXFKR4V6wD9crSJGARQ7yLdEiOjJU3R2cmU_eaVki_KIAcMCsHAj9TUw-AWra32nftbNcc3NSQenmm-EmwNzmDiq584bzlUuo09yJpsoJQavMXj9Ay-uyJFTXR8Zi2tuk/s320/001.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">And turned it into this... (B=black, W=white)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqtJzhRZVaEwl7w-rnoapqHHLv-N37d-WumfhpRxA-1k2b72NHZ4VArUd_aZsgxLV3KwSuwqcyKR2OMl8hbI5cfJyRIEGYHkr26zrtXXVRvSCVzpkmlMkP4Nh0js7VY69jigcqjX6nWYk/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqtJzhRZVaEwl7w-rnoapqHHLv-N37d-WumfhpRxA-1k2b72NHZ4VArUd_aZsgxLV3KwSuwqcyKR2OMl8hbI5cfJyRIEGYHkr26zrtXXVRvSCVzpkmlMkP4Nh0js7VY69jigcqjX6nWYk/s320/001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">(Original Idea below from <a href="http://www.kolcraft.com/blog/tag/winter-crafts-for-kids/">HERE</a>)...I found this idea via Pinterest, and although ours didn't turn out quite as cute, I'm glad I could fit *most* of this craft in...no snow or bows :( because getting this one done was a bit painful, I must admit. After putting on about a dozen squares, if even that, my 3s were telling me they were done. Done?? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I referred them back to my example to motivate them to keep going. I hoped the next day my 4s would be more into it, but no such luck I'm afraid. Next time, I'll scale the size down, and perhaps cut bigger squares. Live and learn... </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img src="http://www.kolcraft.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/penguin_craft-227x300.jpg" /> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here's a page from Mailbox Teacher's Helper that we did...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibZmy-tJTvUJRoMd9jFD2o1FCA73mfT7OXd8dEypPtU7HRAtRQCkNoK17ESsaRnNuBMPkZsfcxUznSELDdrwU0uxKn2htVa9ZengmjoaOKUhHzBqwsP27milFrxYzym8I0RgNcKKNn-T8/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibZmy-tJTvUJRoMd9jFD2o1FCA73mfT7OXd8dEypPtU7HRAtRQCkNoK17ESsaRnNuBMPkZsfcxUznSELDdrwU0uxKn2htVa9ZengmjoaOKUhHzBqwsP27milFrxYzym8I0RgNcKKNn-T8/s320/004.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">After this week, I'm a little burnt out on doing a craft every day. Some of my 4s are misbehaving more regularly during our craft time. I had TWO students on Friday that I did not let finish their craft due to their behavior, and yet another student who I had to confiscate a glue stick from. I proceeded to glue FOR this student so that no more of the glue stick would be needlessly wasted. Maybe it was because of the impending snowstorm we had Friday night... </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I will try 2 more crafts this upcoming week (eskimos!!), but after that, crafts may become few and far in between, I'm afraid. We'll see! How do you manage your craft time???</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I typically give students a piece of their craft at a time, while guiding them on where to glue the piece. I'm wondering if it would be better to just have ALL of the pieces on the table for them while still guiding them... it's worth a try! I'll report back!</div>Mrs. Russell's Classhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09850531716465841164noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4688319330955282361.post-67064481727628945702012-01-17T12:44:00.000-08:002012-01-17T12:44:26.005-08:00More snowman crafts!Sorry for the lack of posting anything lately. The snowman projects I had planned took a little longer than expected. <br />
<br />
After reading <u>The Biggest, Best Snowman</u>, my 4 year old class made name snowmen. (They wrote each letter of their name on a snowball). I am REALLY proud to say that 13 out of 15 wrote their letters independently.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">And, here's yet another snowman craft...this one done by my 3s:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggNUFHzcwRLypyPZjdpIF7MHynh7TIDMsue-4F4ep1x0Y_-2sRWyZPN0f6Fl1yRXBbLdM9DFWjc5qdruSzKL7xKhXs8CcDBuqt31NwhS9DBkhABShP-DnIwxzl-uKNubWn10lUioT6OUU/s1600/013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggNUFHzcwRLypyPZjdpIF7MHynh7TIDMsue-4F4ep1x0Y_-2sRWyZPN0f6Fl1yRXBbLdM9DFWjc5qdruSzKL7xKhXs8CcDBuqt31NwhS9DBkhABShP-DnIwxzl-uKNubWn10lUioT6OUU/s320/013.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">FINALLY finished!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Again, I meant to have students add snowflakes to the sky, but just getting the squares on took long enough. If I were to do this again, next time I would make a snowman HALF the size for my kiddos to fill in with squares. They just didn't keep interested long enough to completely fill the space. The one that IS pretty covered, I helped with! *This idea came from <a href="http://elementaryartroom.blogspot.com/search/label/snowmen">The Elementary Art Room</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">If you look closely, you'll see touches of glitter above the snowman. You'll also notice some with eyes (students that didn't follow directions) and some without eyes (because the snowmen are looking UP!). I can't blame my littles for wanting eyes on their snowmen, and I have to say, they're cute both ways. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This cute little craft comes from <a href="http://ourartlately.blogspot.com/2010/11/are-you-up-for-winter.html">we heart art</a>. <div style="text-align: center;">I only had red felt, so we used tissue paper instead, but I love the project with felt. Next time!</div>Mrs. Russell's Classhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09850531716465841164noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4688319330955282361.post-14047744023161724772012-01-08T10:25:00.000-08:002012-01-08T10:25:44.622-08:00Check out a new blog!Hello! I hope everyone is having a terrific weekend! I wanted to take a minute to blog about a new blog! My step-daughter, who enjoys playing school with her dolls, REALLY wanted to have her own blog! I agreed to help her with one, and I know she would be really excited to have some page views, comments, and/or followers, so show her some blog love at <a href="http://missnewcomerschoolfordolls.blogspot.com/">Miss Newcomer's School for Dolls</a>. (I'm sure a lot of you can relate to when you were younger and played school! I know I did! I wish I would've kept a record of what I did with my "students," so I think if my step-daughter DOES decide to be a teacher one day, this will be really neat for her to look back on.) While you're there, you'll see a sneak-peak of an upcoming project that my class will be doing... Happy Feet Penguins. As I was prepping this project, my step-daughter decided that she was going to have her class do a mini-version of it. It's very cute! The idea comes from <a href="http://ourartlately.blogspot.com/2011/01/happy-feet.html">we heart art</a>. I'm excited for my class to do this project, but first we'll be doing snowmen this week! Thanks for reading!Mrs. Russell's Classhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09850531716465841164noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4688319330955282361.post-52823793451457718902012-01-05T11:29:00.000-08:002012-01-05T11:29:33.169-08:00New Year Craft and 2 Giveaways!Today, my 3 year olds decorated a 2012 banner:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Odiob69sEz8/TwX1B_tVXkI/AAAAAAAAAN4/9jsqc9UAlKU/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Odiob69sEz8/TwX1B_tVXkI/AAAAAAAAAN4/9jsqc9UAlKU/s320/003.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
I planned to do this at the last minute after seeing a flip-book version of this craft featured on April's blog, <a href="http://larremoreteachertips.blogspot.com/2012/01/couple-of-ideas.html">Chalk Talk</a>. The idea comes from <a href="http://pirateslifeforus.blogspot.com/2012/01/whew-what-day.html?showComment=1325643078971#c1932923596013733302">A Pirate's Life for Us</a>. (See below...under each flap, students wrote a resolution). <br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Have you heard about Holly's giveaway at <a href="http://crisscrossapplesauceinfirstgrade.blogspot.com/2012/01/250-followers-different-kind-of.html">Crisscross Applesauce in First Grade?</a> To celebrate reaching 250 followers, she is donating $30 to a charitable organization of the winner's choice. If I win, I would choose for the money to go to the SPCA because animals are so near and dear to my heart. I sometimes watch Animal Cops and it breaks my heart when I see the many cases of animal cruelty. My dog, Louie, is from the SPCA, and I couldn't be more happy to have him. I spoil him, but he spoils me just as much! Be sure to visit Holly's blog for your chance to win this amazing giveaway. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Another great giveaway is taking place at <a href="http://colormekinder.blogspot.com/2012/01/back-to-reality-tpt-giveaway.html?showComment=1325790019454#c9202893921766424974">Color Me Kinder</a>. Edana is giving away a $10 gift certificate to Teachers Pay Teachers! Head on over for your chance to win! While you're there, be sure to check out Edana's New Year's ideas. I can't wait to use them next year!!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

I have to admit, I'm not great when it comes to following the rules of awards, but I will do my best with this one. I am always so excited to see when I have people looking at my blog, comments, and awards, so thank you, thank you, thank you!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eajjvjClMQw/TwIwTA0pgFI/AAAAAAAAARI/Kwp7JpnNd_U/s1600/blog-award.png" /> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The rules of this award are to thank the person that nominated you with a link back to them, to tell 7 things about yourself, and to pass this award on to 15 newly discovered blogs and let them know that they've received an award.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Here goes with the 7 things about me. I haven't really shared anything about myself, so I hope you enjoy getting to know me a bit better!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">1. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Studies from San Diego State University in December of 2006. </div><div style="text-align: center;"> <img height="200" src="http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-ash1/v45/34/116/24600192/n24600192_31062620_5022.jpg" width="142" /></div><div style="text-align: left;">2. My favorite shows are Friends, Criminal Minds, and American Horror Story. I also enjoy 2 Broke Girls and I Hate My Teenage Daughter. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">3. My favorite movies are 27 Dresses, Just Like Heaven, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and The Proposal just to name a few.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">4. I LOVE my dog, Louie! Here he is sporting my SDSU sweatshirt.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j3oPgu6obi0/TwTYHXI7PmI/AAAAAAAAANs/r-VOxzYiBxQ/s1600/IMG_2400.JPG2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j3oPgu6obi0/TwTYHXI7PmI/AAAAAAAAANs/r-VOxzYiBxQ/s200/IMG_2400.JPG2.JPG" width="199" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">5. I am a wife and a stepmom. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img height="211" src="http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2359/34/116/24600192/n24600192_36052670_8091402.jpg" width="320" /> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">6. I live in Pennsylvania...because it's where my parents live. I MISS San Diego so much, especially this time of year when it's so awfully cold here!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">7. And finally....hmm....I haven't landed a contracted teaching job yet, which is very discouraging. I've done day-to-day subbing and long-term subbing. Currently, as you know, I'm teaching preschool. I'm working on my Reading Specialist certification in hopes to get a contracted job! Hopefully it will pay off! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">If there's anything else you'd like me to share, feel free to ask. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Now, here's where I'm going to break the rules. I follow a lot of blogs...not sure how many... 20 or so? I know that's not a TON but most I've been following for awhile, so they're not newly discovered, and I'm SURE they've received tons of awards. My top 3, scratch that, 4.... no, make it 5...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">1. <a href="http://mrsjumpsclass.blogspot.com/">Mrs. Jump's Class</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">2. <a href="http://mrsleeskinderkids.blogspot.com/">Mrs. Lee's Kindergarten</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">3. <a href="http://lifeinfirstgrade1.blogspot.com/">Life in First Grade</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">4. <a href="http://larremoreteachertips.blogspot.com/">Chalk Talk</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">5. <a href="http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/">The First Grade Parade</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">If you haven't visited these blogs, they are amazing, and most of my ideas come from them! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Thanks again for the comments, awards, and shout-outs. I appreciate it!! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I hope you enjoyed your holiday break! Today was back to school for me, and here's what we did...<br />
<br />
For our read-aloud, I read <u>Squirrel's New Year's Resolution</u>.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img height="200" src="http://ts4.mm.bing.net/images/thumbnail.aspx?q=1518164843699&id=18185747c0228bb03891902fd1df2d3e" width="165" /> </div><br />
For our follow-up craft, which didn't have anything to do with squirrels....we made this darling craft:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-94H2HCvvkfs/TwNntn9BTfI/AAAAAAAAAMY/e-Qcdsu63K0/s1600/186.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-94H2HCvvkfs/TwNntn9BTfI/AAAAAAAAAMY/e-Qcdsu63K0/s320/186.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Here's a close-up (above and below done by my 3s):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BygTAUOv0L0/TwNoGJjwIzI/AAAAAAAAAMk/zXHqp9ph_Fg/s1600/189.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BygTAUOv0L0/TwNoGJjwIzI/AAAAAAAAAMk/zXHqp9ph_Fg/s320/189.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I found this idea from the wonderful Cara Carroll at <a href="http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/">The First Grade Parade</a>.<br />
<br />
I wanted to use scrapbook paper like Cara did, but unfortunately I couldn't find any confetti or New Year's pages, so I opted for construction paper and let the kids decorate them. I also wanted to use the glitter poms and thought I had some in my supply closet, but it turns out I only had boring old regular ones, so that's what we had to use... (below are Cara's...aren't they great!!) <br />
<br />
<img alt="newyear1" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_WNeca9Q0uPk/TSaUATSd3II/AAAAAAAAPnE/Y-Ka3VVWenM/newyear1_thumb%5B2%5D.jpg?imgmax=800" /> <img alt="newyear5" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_WNeca9Q0uPk/TSaUCvzJG2I/AAAAAAAAPn0/yLwwPkldUVE/newyear5_thumb%5B1%5D.jpg?imgmax=800" /><br />
<br />
*Also, be sure to check out Brooke Perry's <a href="http://www.eduperry.com/2012/01/im-back.html">post</a>! I love her idea to graph what time her students went to bed on New Year's Eve (regular time, a little later than usual, a little after midnight, or late night owl). Love it!<br />
<br />
<br />
Here was our morning work...just some plain and simple coloring for our first day back!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Finally, here's our center work activities, both of which came from Mailbox:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Happy New Year again!! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

<br />
For morning work, they completed a color-by-number...<br />

During story time, I read <u>That's Not Santa</u> by Leonard Kessler. Then, we made Santa Stars.<br />

It's been really exciting to see my stats and followers go up! Thanks to everyone who's been stopping by! <br />
<br />
Today I read <u>How the Grinch Stole Christmas</u> to my 4 year old class. Then we made <a href="http://mrsjumpsclass.blogspot.com/2011/12/grinch-unit-and-free-music-download.html">Deanna Jump's Grinch Grin</a>, from her Grinch Unit. We didn't do the drawing/writing part of this activity, so ours are a bit plain, but it was fun and cute nonetheless. Unfortunately, I haven't done a lot of writing with my preschoolers yet (just their names and numbers 0-10). My New Year's Resolution is to start up Kid Writing!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwkeps8nRhcpBb-71NmlRd6yvupdzvL0CUt9SjYcHPQ_bFkgpoCs85WMaEh8BKvOC8fUHjdRox6bshjADqGpZ1N_sKtkvkYWcYTMRgDS3doeV2W25JcQF_5G1CuZAKC96qCJCZzzrZSyc/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwkeps8nRhcpBb-71NmlRd6yvupdzvL0CUt9SjYcHPQ_bFkgpoCs85WMaEh8BKvOC8fUHjdRox6bshjADqGpZ1N_sKtkvkYWcYTMRgDS3doeV2W25JcQF_5G1CuZAKC96qCJCZzzrZSyc/s320/002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Here's a close-up of one:<br />

I absolutely LOVE the spin Cara Carroll at <a href="http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/2011/12/little-q-christmas-in-my-classroom.html">The First Grade Parade</a> put on her Grinch... the scalloped circles for the Santa hat (see below). I plan to buy a scalloped circle puncher, but I had to make due with my plain circle puncher for this year! I have circle punchers in a few different sizes, and I have to say, they are worth the money for all the time they've saved me!!! <br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="christmasroom15" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-u_zYxuevKCo/TuIxsQy2qpI/AAAAAAAAWek/1-udO8XhYts/christmasroom15_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" /> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">This was our Grinch morning work...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPRYdbyOYk8dwUqNE883EDs7mhzYcxX3gxTX2w-9xFNBmVWSWcTKqRTKHwLBu0_S6Iul_eKzHUj1WnDWD3KxL3x_N_2kCPRcE4-HM4yZdWRFJUZjxeD4PND8woUdhC1-gBTYuSUFwtrlk/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPRYdbyOYk8dwUqNE883EDs7mhzYcxX3gxTX2w-9xFNBmVWSWcTKqRTKHwLBu0_S6Iul_eKzHUj1WnDWD3KxL3x_N_2kCPRcE4-HM4yZdWRFJUZjxeD4PND8woUdhC1-gBTYuSUFwtrlk/s320/004.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">And this patterning activity was one of our center activities (also from Deanna Jump's Grinch Unit):</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzjWA0XTMhIsw_BH3934BPVK8o4VRJqpwFPJt3MmJTw4Px_hUOq5WFGJSH21bfxuJ2hRsdeLKuPKZgzI87aOKCO27G647nr8KnHrrSy9PC2yAsWNa6Xy8uU4YNbhXgcw7Ic-bMvFXjQkk/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzjWA0XTMhIsw_BH3934BPVK8o4VRJqpwFPJt3MmJTw4Px_hUOq5WFGJSH21bfxuJ2hRsdeLKuPKZgzI87aOKCO27G647nr8KnHrrSy9PC2yAsWNa6Xy8uU4YNbhXgcw7Ic-bMvFXjQkk/s320/007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Most of my kiddos gave me what you see above. I</div><div style="text-align: center;">A few, like the one below, really went to town...(I just realized the pattern is the same as the one above, which is funny, because they sit at different tables!)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Awhile back, I said I would post a picture of the gingerbread men we watercolored.... note to self... print these poor guys on cardstock next time.... regular copier paper creates for ripped projects and whining! </div><div style="text-align: center;">And finally, I was hoping to link up with <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/">Oh' Boy 4th Grade's Currently December</a>, but I'm not sure how to add text onto her template.... somebody's going to have to explain that to me! : ) </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">One more day of the Grinch with my 3s tomorrow, then I'll be back on Wednesday or Thursday with cute little Santa Stars to share!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

Afterwards, we made these Polar Express trains from <a href="http://mrsjumpsclass.blogspot.com/">Deanna Jump</a>'s Polar Express Unit:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsVduDOyO87m8oypswbFy4gY9Dxth6A3_sisFzpyPXKYNNL49qcOcUNrapDxonl042rZrvr622hb4atKzVotfyTJb6gP5BdUXrIELe76WGRh97OdJvCIpxCqOEhvTxDuAP4R-dmefZ3YI/s1600/012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsVduDOyO87m8oypswbFy4gY9Dxth6A3_sisFzpyPXKYNNL49qcOcUNrapDxonl042rZrvr622hb4atKzVotfyTJb6gP5BdUXrIELe76WGRh97OdJvCIpxCqOEhvTxDuAP4R-dmefZ3YI/s320/012.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
When I purchased this unit from Deanna, I didn't know it had this train craft. It was an unexpected but hoped for treasure that I knew was PERFECT for my class to do as a follow-up to the book! Unfortunately, I didn't have gray construction paper for the front of the train, so we used black which blends in with the background paper, but I still love how they turned out. (Click <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Browse/Seller/All/?search=deanna%20jump">HERE</a> for a link to Deanna's TPT store).<br />
<br />
To guide my students in making this craft, I made a template for them by running the construction paper through the copier (quick and easy). I outlined this one with white crayon so it would show up in the picture better. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLg5H1rbbuEqoLYsBodLoVFvewfQoFBuvH0TXzU8DxILo1hAiZiZh7gliz1bXbzkBYrn7tZyiY4KncO5Fdly9Kjr82OkD2S7a6uGTGx__zf4hDrp5OpuPje4UUSQoAth71SYS9kpfm_-M/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLg5H1rbbuEqoLYsBodLoVFvewfQoFBuvH0TXzU8DxILo1hAiZiZh7gliz1bXbzkBYrn7tZyiY4KncO5Fdly9Kjr82OkD2S7a6uGTGx__zf4hDrp5OpuPje4UUSQoAth71SYS9kpfm_-M/s320/010.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I was worried that my sweeties would have trouble positioning the pieces right on the paper without having a guide, and I wanted to make sure they had enough room to do some painting. After giving them their template to guide them, I passed out the pieces for them to glue on. They did a great job putting the pieces of the puzzle together. <br />
<br />
For morning work, we completed a Mailbox page that I thought fit with our Polar Express theme:<br />
"Tickets to Ride" (I took this picture before the students arrived, so this one isn't done yet)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUKxwyU1PhT1mjItJGIy2btt7qRvWxT-K6-yytdoyWmmIp9uu1fecIC-MzGCqDLv8L23jKdbGawr6SFpTWzdWlyNrvvwRyTGIwo2LjpjYaorbAWTwvyy4mVBF7XGlB8HQ5sHZVBmNuIV8/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUKxwyU1PhT1mjItJGIy2btt7qRvWxT-K6-yytdoyWmmIp9uu1fecIC-MzGCqDLv8L23jKdbGawr6SFpTWzdWlyNrvvwRyTGIwo2LjpjYaorbAWTwvyy4mVBF7XGlB8HQ5sHZVBmNuIV8/s320/011.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Every Friday, I send an Optional Homework assignment in each kiddo's folder. It makes me happy every Monday morning when I see completed homework in their folders that they've brought back in to show me. I decided to make homework optional because, let's face it, these kids are only 3 or 4. A lot of the kids have stay-at home moms that are sending their kids to preschool to be enriched. They don't HAVE to send their kid to preschool, so I work hard to make my preschool program very educational, and I like to send these optional assignments home to give these parents tools to use at home. I'm lucky that many of my preschoolers get worked with at home. I think this is GREAT, and I am happy to provide them with resources for extra practice on things we do at preschool. Below was the optional homework I sent today:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDXcRrObw6i2eZhKpIcWv8_acJ9DeMUwtVxnYE7H-sfrnhRJiifZXHw9hrqebnPRZfCkALV8Y_NZgK59hSQYhf3nS7aT_vTv-FLxiohIzbQ2LTjbjTShm2ctLp6YqI97U70y0320IpBXk/s1600/013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDXcRrObw6i2eZhKpIcWv8_acJ9DeMUwtVxnYE7H-sfrnhRJiifZXHw9hrqebnPRZfCkALV8Y_NZgK59hSQYhf3nS7aT_vTv-FLxiohIzbQ2LTjbjTShm2ctLp6YqI97U70y0320IpBXk/s320/013.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
As you can see, I write Optional Homework on the paper so that parents are aware that it's not mandatory.<br />
<br />
Thanks for looking! Have a wonderful weekend! I'll still be teaching through next Thursday, so be sure to come back soon to see the Grinch and Santa activities I have planned for next week!Mrs. Russell's Classhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09850531716465841164noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4688319330955282361.post-90933869131835715182011-12-12T12:00:00.000-08:002011-12-12T12:00:20.256-08:00Elf Activities<div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Product Details" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31UBg8POSoL._AA160_.jpg" /></div><br />

Below is a close-up of one. Notice that the maker of this one put the shoes on the "right" way. Above you can see that a couple have their shoes on funny! : ) <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_IuC5ZUts86v7ycxiDU0siBgdvc-nHO2Eav3mfWZEHyRb5tnMGLhVAMQJiW9ANzRq6OGoIFYntjE9XDW3RbwdVa4qRWY5pDJgUqfuGn7TjJIGYecvdwq_IY1XEExC3EEd7agOnvLM16c/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_IuC5ZUts86v7ycxiDU0siBgdvc-nHO2Eav3mfWZEHyRb5tnMGLhVAMQJiW9ANzRq6OGoIFYntjE9XDW3RbwdVa4qRWY5pDJgUqfuGn7TjJIGYecvdwq_IY1XEExC3EEd7agOnvLM16c/s320/005.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
As you can see, this was an involved craft. I had all of the tracing and cutting done ahead of time (with the help of my wonderful classroom aide). I also had some of the pieces put together ahead of time (I put the ears and hair on the heads. I also put the balls on the shoes and the hat ahead of time also. AND I glued the googly eyes beforehand as well). I was so glad I could do this craft with my class. I'm so lucky right now to have the time on my hands to prepare involved crafts like this one. Next semester, I will be taking 3 grad classes to get my Reading Specialist certification, so, needless to say, I won't have quite as much time!<br />
<br />
Here was our elf morning work:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbBHXTpB04qYlq2X25KO1QsclZ11ncMApMOpAEDHNJz3X07P3oizmm3-08BOY-kNRXs9P259NFNz2u-Hma7iVs6z8aw_KSQayIzTMBL8FAHugeIlA-MJhllYEWsUwWm4zpq5X588ldl2o/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbBHXTpB04qYlq2X25KO1QsclZ11ncMApMOpAEDHNJz3X07P3oizmm3-08BOY-kNRXs9P259NFNz2u-Hma7iVs6z8aw_KSQayIzTMBL8FAHugeIlA-MJhllYEWsUwWm4zpq5X588ldl2o/s320/001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Students had to color by letter. (e = green, l = red, and f = yellow). This free activity can be found <a href="http://www.coloring.ws/christmas15.htm">HERE</a>.<br />
<br />
Below are center activities we did today:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhciKzJgZMk_xUVfAea0Po6pvIaDR220mqghG8JIUl57h4ZEfnUpgXCADbmntPYK9IdITXk51h8kbWfXZAhCq_5u0w24vYJKjwRZlS_vite3EjUv3RPeixcuf_i92RoLQjxgQNppSNetC0/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhciKzJgZMk_xUVfAea0Po6pvIaDR220mqghG8JIUl57h4ZEfnUpgXCADbmntPYK9IdITXk51h8kbWfXZAhCq_5u0w24vYJKjwRZlS_vite3EjUv3RPeixcuf_i92RoLQjxgQNppSNetC0/s320/002.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
We completed this graphing activity from Fran Kramer at <a href="http://kindergartencrayons.blogspot.com/">Kindergarten Crayons</a>. Although we did our gingerbread week last week, I couldn't help but roll this one in. We did a graphing activity last week, and because graphing is still a pretty new skill for my preschoolers, I was happy to give them more practice with it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjekwOwVU9ZCeec81M9HJxEOqzqMWp_jQ5CQQIZYMt5v4NzXMBH2sjDNFD6BGeYFHz8Mz49mEEj39RKJA_zYdCg3HNS52P-ERijoNhWKIvsBwbDcC18QbDkG56_JabfZcoaHwq1wUFnPrE/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjekwOwVU9ZCeec81M9HJxEOqzqMWp_jQ5CQQIZYMt5v4NzXMBH2sjDNFD6BGeYFHz8Mz49mEEj39RKJA_zYdCg3HNS52P-ERijoNhWKIvsBwbDcC18QbDkG56_JabfZcoaHwq1wUFnPrE/s320/003.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
We also filled the sleigh with rhyming words. This worksheet came from the Dec./Jan. 2011-2012 Mailbox Teacher's Helper for Kindergarten. <br />
<br />
I'll be repeating these activities with my 3s tomorrow. 4s did them today. I'll be back later this week with more holiday fun!Mrs. Russell's Classhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09850531716465841164noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4688319330955282361.post-24371101680766891252011-12-08T11:31:00.000-08:002011-12-08T11:31:58.427-08:00Gingerbread Fun!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF6DNkOLHwHLZRMpVA0hVDAvlJclEuurJTByQnFZgSE8OVbdrR6TdrSF_4pEYZpH9imQn1uX4D9GdqFBulBn2HUCxPsuq6Trz3m5Q-A513I9tbThg7MmkcVV4yT1PAI8PgnAvDmP4uDSQ/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF6DNkOLHwHLZRMpVA0hVDAvlJclEuurJTByQnFZgSE8OVbdrR6TdrSF_4pEYZpH9imQn1uX4D9GdqFBulBn2HUCxPsuq6Trz3m5Q-A513I9tbThg7MmkcVV4yT1PAI8PgnAvDmP4uDSQ/s320/002.JPG" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhivby3u1fp8RTs0IzMLBIwDYzzZ-s0jzREVVKPW4HR45XIYt19T3Y9-ZvtE-V92mt6dOJUpHiAb6jUt1PaENFz_fin-FdaOyhrTFdOMPZx7ghl3U4qOSk7w7AXIODZMqP2du6EjO5d780/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhivby3u1fp8RTs0IzMLBIwDYzzZ-s0jzREVVKPW4HR45XIYt19T3Y9-ZvtE-V92mt6dOJUpHiAb6jUt1PaENFz_fin-FdaOyhrTFdOMPZx7ghl3U4qOSk7w7AXIODZMqP2du6EjO5d780/s320/001.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
Here are the Gingerbread Houses we made! I found this idea at Gluesticks, Games, and Giggles and made my own patterns for the craft with the exception of the candy cane and gingerbread man. <br />
<br />
We also did activities from Julie Lee's Gingerbread Unit:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDOpzqWuuuJBPccQP8JI_dvWcvrqAXzCCobru8wAQIgWs-LAfOvWHbLG0gh0xf5fIVEY1WriKp6d0iwFWlwF3zZdVer31p1Hb1G1jLsG7bgIcAz9C2wcUpireA-0OkaDGMKIxuDUvlj0U/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDOpzqWuuuJBPccQP8JI_dvWcvrqAXzCCobru8wAQIgWs-LAfOvWHbLG0gh0xf5fIVEY1WriKp6d0iwFWlwF3zZdVer31p1Hb1G1jLsG7bgIcAz9C2wcUpireA-0OkaDGMKIxuDUvlj0U/s320/003.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">We read and colored <u>The Gingerbread Cookie</u>.</div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">*All of the above worksheet activities are from Julie Lee's Gingerbread Unit. I modified the Candy Count worksheet to allow my preschoolers more room to glue their peppermints down. There are two more on the back, but I only had a couple of my early finishers do those. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Below, we counted pennies and wrote the number. My preschoolers do NOT like writing numbers! </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I just ordered these Follow-the-Dots-Number-Stamps from Lakeshore (only $9.95!). </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">Next time we have a center worksheet where students have to write the number, I will allow them to choose the stamp they need, stamp the number, and trace! Plus, I plan to use these stamps to create some number writing practice pages! Whether they like it or not, my preschoolers <b>are</b> going to practice writing numbers! I think using the stamps will make it more fun for them, and fun is good! </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuVQKmDZs3hskPAvpOoWVyWPWxGDNrVuOEx_PBLbGRSHzRqRuvOdV4qoxE1h63172C9ADmyCF_YrX2utzu73pUabbynk5jMCDn5ofoGxJ1Md4IqZHM1Vlqt2Hu0ZYLkX6vGPtWda_S5JI/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuVQKmDZs3hskPAvpOoWVyWPWxGDNrVuOEx_PBLbGRSHzRqRuvOdV4qoxE1h63172C9ADmyCF_YrX2utzu73pUabbynk5jMCDn5ofoGxJ1Md4IqZHM1Vlqt2Hu0ZYLkX6vGPtWda_S5JI/s320/001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
If you've purchased her pack, you can see that I adjusted the activity... I opted to let my preschoolers freely decorate their tree and didn't have them make a pattern out of the ornaments... although, of course, I would have loved to have them do it. My kids have gotten really good at extending patterns, but making patterns is still a work in progress. I also opted not to use the square or triangle ornaments... just the circles. Although everything was precut for them.... as you can tell from just a few trees that fit in the picture, each tree came out unique. We completed this craft after reading <u>The Biggest, Most Beautiful Christmas Tree</u>, and my preschoolers were excited to be able to make their own big and beautiful tree! <br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Speaking of pennies.... I review coins and coin values EVERYDAY with my preschoolers since I know that coins and coin values are taught and expected to be learned by the end of Kindergarten. From my experience teaching Kindergarten as a Long Term sub, it takes awhile for kids to learn coins. So, I figured, why not expose them in Preschool. Can't hurt, right? One of my preschool parents has a son in my 4 year old class and a son in Kindergarten and told me that her Kindergarten son, who is learning coins in Kindergarten, got upset that his preschooler brother knew all of the coins and he didn't! He was upset, too, that he wasn't taught coins in preschool : ) Of course, not all of my preschoolers have learned all of the coins and values, but several have, and this makes me smile!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I use poems that I found <a href="http://www.jmeacham.com/balanced%20literacy/balanced.literacy.shared.reading.htm#coins">HERE</a> on Jessica Meacham's website. Under December, January, February and March, click on Coins. Clicking on the coins link will give you access to her free printables of the poems. I made the Shared Reading Chart Sized Posters! Before I found blogs, I found Jessica Meacham's website, and let me tell you, it is a valuable resource. I've taken and used a lot of her ideas!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This week I will be doing a gingerbread theme, and I was excited to find a free gingerbread printable (ordering numbers 11-20), from Fran Kramer that you can find <a href="http://kindergartencrayons.blogspot.com/">HERE</a>...and as I was writing my post, she posted ANOTHER gingerbread freebie (writing lowercase letters to match the given uppercase letter)!!! Yay!</div>Mrs. Russell's Classhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09850531716465841164noreply@blogger.com2
